At The Createry, we feel passionate about our local community and about making a difference to the needy and vulnerable within our community.
The community service we have chosen to support is a local women’s domestic violence refuge. Domestic violence is a growing problem here in Australia, with approximately one in five women (and their children) being subjected to domestic violence in their home. Our local refuge provides counselling and support for these women. In many cases, women and children are in immediate danger and so the refuge provides a safe environment and helps these brave women restart their lives.
We aim to provide lovely hand made gifts to these women and their children when they enter the refuge. Initially we will focus of making crocheted baby blankets, as a number of young women will be having babies over the coming months. Later, we may focus on quilts and hand made soft toys.
If you can crochet and would like to help us crochet blocks for these baby blankets, we would love to hear from you. With your help, we can provide a lovely gift to these vulnerable women to let them know they are loved and have a community who cares.

MORE PEOPLE – MORE BLANKETS FOR BABIES IN SHELTERS!
Can you crochet circles? If so please help by crocheting the Love Block Circle. Grab your hook and use the free pattern (please follow the link below). Crochet one or as many colourful circles as you like. When you are ready, please give or send them to us and we will crochet the white border around the circles and then wash, block and assemble them to make a gorgeous blanket to give to the refuge shelter.
Can you help crochet the border and join the crochet squares? Are you local, then you can join us at The Createry on a Charity Workshop day or evening. Every one to two months we will meet and crochet the borders and crochet all the squares together. On this day/evening you are also welcome to just sit and crochet the circles. It is not a beginners class (you can join crochet beginners classes HERE), you need to know your stitches. There will be people to help if you get stuck.
Help this good cause? Are you able to supply some of the much needed yarn? Please contact Sarah ph 0425 000 842 or Julie ph. 0411 119 923
Also please help by spreading this message to your friends or let us know if you have some ideas on how we can get more hands to help?
For the squares please use:
- 8 ply yarn in natural fiber e.g. wool or bamboo or a mix of these.
- Use a size 4 crochet hook
- Use any colours for the circles
- Please Note! To get the blankets consistent we have desided to use the same yarn each time for the borders. If you want to also crochet the border around the circle, please use this yarn: 8 ply FROST (nr. 312) LUXURY 100% wool from BENDIGO WOOLLEN MILLS
